If you are not interested in the details of cataloging, this workshop may not be for you. Simply continue to send CKLS you items for cataloging. However, if you would like to better understand how to enhance records or create basic temporary records, or to interpret current records, join us for this session.
CKLS does cataloging for member libraries for free. However, if you have a burning desire to learn more about MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging), join Kathy Rippel for this introduction to basic MARC fields and subfields.
Since MARC is used by all library online catalogs, this workshop would be useful to CKLS librarians using Pathfinder Central and other versions of Koha, Books Systems, TLS, Follett, etc.
All participants should come with the staff-side Web address, logins and passwords for your library's catalog. We will have the mobile lab up and running. You will be able to go to the staff-side of your catalog, login and see your MARC cataloging as it appears back at your library.
What will be covered:
Most common fields and their formats
Must have fixed field/008/Leader Coding
Discuss the importance of correct MARC coding for interlibrary loan
MARC fields for enhancing local catalog records
Online sources of information about MARC and subject headings
What will not be covered:This is NOT a cataloging course. You will not learn how to choose main entries, the difference between AACR2 and RDA, how to build Dewey classification numbers, or all of the minutiae of cataloging!
