CKLS Phone from Home can function as these residents' "home library". By calling the toll-free number (800-362-2642) they may request materials or ask reference questions. The books, video, and audio materials requested will be sent directly to the patron's home and will include a postage-paid return label.

The Technical Services Department orders, catalogs, and processes library materials for member libraries, as well as providing MARC records. We supply physical and bibliographical preparation of books so they are ready "shelf ready". We secure the best possible discounts from jobbers through volume buying and provide processing supplies to member libraries at quantity discount prices.

Ordering

CKLS orders enough popular titles from Ingram to receive a 40% discount on most items. We can order from other sources as well, but discounts may not be as liberal.

Librarians wishing to purchase items themselves and wanting CKLS cataloging and processing can have items "dropped shipped" to us. This means the shipping address should say [Your library name] c/o Central Kansas Library System, 1409 Willams Street, Great Bend, KS. Billing address should specify your library.

Cataloging

CKLS member libraries are encouraged to provide access to their collections through standard cataloging (MARC standards) and quality bibliographic information. Member librarians are expected to enter new records and remove obsolete records from the statewide bibliographic database through either the CKLS Technical Services Department or another method approved by the State Library.

All CKLS cataloging provides MARC records to the library and places the cataloging record on the state's Kansas Library Catalog. Librarians wishing only cataloging for items should fill out "pink slips" for that item and mail them to Technical Services. If you need more “pink slips” contact our Department.

We also do original cataloging for all items that do not have MARC records from other sources.

Disc Cleaning

Technical Services offers disc cleaning for CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and Games. Please contact Missy for more information.
If you would like to send discs for cleaning, please use the List of CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and Games form.

The Interlibrary Loan Department:

  • Locates requested material and asks that the material be sent to the requesting library.
  • Helps the staff of member libraries verify requests using appropriate technologies.
  • Oversees training of new interlibrary loan personnel from member libraries and promotes adherence to the interlibrary loan protocols.
  • Assists local librarians in securing the return of overdue interlibrary loan materials.
  • Assesses interlibrary loan procedures annually and makes recommendations for improvements.

Through Interlibrary Loan Service any library in the state can offer patrons access to materials not available at the local library. Resource sharing among System libraries depends on a local commitment to interlibrary loan. System interlibrary loan services facilitate the transfer of library materials from one Kansas library to another in response to a specific patron request.

Interlibrary Loan Service is offered to all readers in the Central Kansas Library System area through the local public library, or, for rural residents, directly from CKLS by Phone-From-Home Service. Materials not available at the local public library may be requested on interlibrary loan through the local librarian. Rural residents may call CKLS directly for interlibrary loan assistance.

Photocopy requests of periodical articles or book sections may be sent to CKLS. If the request cannot be filled by CKLS resources, it is referred to another library which may charge a reproduction fee for the photocopy.

Librarians are encouraged to offer and promote interlibrary loan service to their patrons. Member libraries are encouraged to accept responsibility for training staff to handle interlibrary loan transactions and gather statistics as needed by the System or the State Library.

Resource Access and Sharing is serious about obtaining the materials for library patrons in our Region, whether directly from CKLS or one of the member libraries.

Technical Services works with libraries to purchase, catalog, and process materials for patron use.
Interlibrary Loan borrows materials for patron use that are not owned by our libraries. We also lend materials around the world as part of our commitment to resource sharing.

Pathfinder Central is the online catalog that lists the materials owned by thirty-eight member libraries, as well as the Central Kansas Library System's professional collection.

Phone From Home extends library services to those that do not have a local library and makes materials and information available directly to these residents.
