Lang Memorial Library was established March 29, 1923, in memory of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Lang from a legacy of the Lang Estate. Mrs. Lang wished to give something in keeping with a memorial and decided that a library would be most appropriate and beneficial. The ground for the library was donated by Mrs. Sam Anspaugh, A.D. Jellison, and Mrs. Joe Tobias.
On August 5, 1924, the library building was formally opened to the public. Until it was completed, the library's collection was housed in a room of the Longfellow Grade School. Nearly five thousand books of reference, fiction, and classics were donated and purchased.
The privileges of library use extended also to the persons outside of city limits in an area tributary to Wilson upon payment of one dollar annually.
The library became a member of CKLS in 1978. Services in addition to books and magazines provided by the library are the Summer Reading Program for grade school students, microfilm of the local newspapers, a microfilm reader, a 16 mm projector, records and tapes for checkout, the preschoolers' story time which began in the fall of 1979, and all services provided by CKLS. The library is available to organizations for a meeting place and will also provide special programs.
The opening of this fine building as a home for Wilson's library marked a new era in the intellectual progress of the town and the name of the noble benefactress, Mrs. Lizzie Lang, is remembered with gratitude by generations of people. Clubs and individuals continue to give support to the library by their donations for the good of the community.
