The Scandia City Library was founded in November of 1931 by the U and I Club with donated books and volunteer librarians. The U and I Club took turns as librarians. It was open two hours weekly. Located in the upstairs of Gulik's Hardware Store Building, a pioneer business, the native limestone building was on the west end of the business district on Main Street. With an outside entrance, a pot-bellied wood stove and kerosene lanterns, it met the needs of the community at that time. The Library moved into the former Presbyterian Church building in 1941, sharing the basement with various clubs. This was on the east end of Main Street.
In 1972 the present building was erected on the plot of land given the city by Dr. V.C. Haggman, the city's early day doctor. The Library is now located across the street west of the former church building. Moving was a community project, with all ages carrying and stacking books on shelves in the new Library, which shares the building with the City Museum. The Kansas State Library loaned the Scandia City Library two study carrels, a table and eight chairs, a magazine rack, a book cart and four metal shelf units. The Library is now open sixteen hours weekly. As a Community Library with the Central Kansas Library System, the Scandia City Library offers patrons the same advantages as the larger libraries in the System, with the assistance of Interlibrary Loan, Rotating Books and other CKLS services.
