In 1920 Cash and Ella Hobson offered the city of Republic $5,000 with which to build a library building in memory of their son, Rae Hobson, who died in W orId War II. A handsome brick building was built in 1921.
In 1922 the Hobsons offered to meet any amount of money that the ladies of the Library Club could raise, which was to be used to buy books. Many more books were donated by people of the community.
The library building is the only one of its kind in Republic County, except for the county seat of Belleville, to have a building especially built for the purpose of housing a library. It is located northeast of the Republic business district.
Services provided by the library include an active Story Time and a Summer Reading Program for children of the community; an expanding collection of video tapes and records; newspapers on microfilm dating back to the early nineteen hundreds; and a meeting room used by the Ladies Library Club and other organizations. One shelf is given to early pioneer pictures and large bank books of the late eighteen hundreds.
Children attending Story Hour are intrigued by a stuffed armadillo caught in Texas and given to the library by a citizen of Republic.
The community enjoys the fiction and non-fiction books from the Rotating Collection, and all other services of the Central Kansas Library System.
