In June of 1967, a bookmobile stopped in front of the William Jansonius home and the driver asked about the availability of space and a sponsor for a traveling library for the town of Prairie View. The Jansoniuses offered their basement, and the Sunshine Leaders EHU offered to be a sponsor, and the Sunshine Library of Prairie View was born. Under the guidance of the EHU's Sunshine Library Committee, library volunteers were organized and a permanent collection of books began to grow, some donated, some bought with funds raised by bake sales, fines, or from cash gifts from past high school classes or individuals. By early winter, 1971, the expanding library moved into a former barbershop in the Bethke building on Main Street, and in March of the following year, the collection moved up the street into the Community Building.
In April of 1975, the people of Prairie View voted to establish a public library, and in May of that year, a library board was appointed. The new Sunshine City Library became a member of CKLS in June of that year. The Library benefited from System services in the past, and with CKLS help, the summer reading programs had been resounding successes. Now Prairie View was truly a part of CKLS. The Sunshine City Library was accepted as a qualified legal library in December of 1975.
While the collection of books and services offered continued to grow, the library building's space did not, so in June of 1985, the Library gratefully accepted the gift of the former home of Stevannah Van De Wege and promptly began plans to remodel and occupy the building. On July 6, 1985, the old library on Main Street was closed and the new library at 402 First Street was opened on August 3. An Open House was held August 14. Since that time, new shelves have been built, the garage has been paneled and carpeted for a clubroom, a large storeroom has been added, a sign has been put up for identification, a magazine area has been completed, yard work has begun, and telephone service has started.
Over the years, the library has sponsored Summer Reading Programs, Story Hours, Craft Fairs, a postcard display, and many civic affairs. Boy Scout meetings, blood pressure clinics, 4-H meetings, and many clubs have taken advantage of the facilities. Baby showers have been held in the library, also. Each at the December Appreciation Party for all who have contributed time to help the community library, it seems more people have become involved. And it all started with three red boxes of books!
