The Otis Community Library originated in June of 1954. The library was originally located in the balcony of the City Hall; years later it was moved to space in the City Building, which was vacated by the old Post Office. In the beginning the library was open one afternoon and one evening, with volunteer librarians. Many books were donated by patrons, while others were ordered from the traveling library at Topeka. The caring people of Otis are the true foundations of the library. The library was organized through donated time, books, service, and funds.
In 1966 a new board was organized with a new Constitution and By-Laws. This was also the year the library hired its first librarian, Lola Brack. Lola has dedicated more than twenty years to the well-being of the library and continues to serve her community as librarian.
The many services at the Otis Community Library include Story Hour, held twice a month, and annual Summer Reading Programs for the children. The library also works with the public school system to further the children's reading education. A close relationship is kept with the local City, Fire, Sheriff, and Health Departments to further educate people about their services. For special events, the library promotes public service by displaying many subjects of interest to the community. For example, exhibits have included the school's art class creations, quilts, and interesting local collections.
Anyone living in Otis or the surrounding area knows and shares the importance of the library. The people make it the outstanding establishment it is, and the library and its services are deeply appreciated.
