The McCracken Public Library was established in January 1936 by the New Era Club. No election was held for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a public library. The ladies of the New Era Club served as librarians on a volunteer basis. The library board consists of seven members appointed by the city council. In March of 1966 the library joined the Central Kansas Library System.

The library is open Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. June Bible, Adelaide Mills and Mamie Crawshaw serve as librarians.

The library features a very outstanding art collection with pictures by Michael Jilg, MarIana Stoddard, Jack Clark, Rev. Elmer Robinson, Charlotte Fluharty, Harlan Anderson, Virgil Haas, and a print by Sean Miller. The library has a microfilm reader and film of the McCracken Enterprise newspapers dated from 1887-1945, a movie projector and film strips, and a desk, all of which were bought with donations from local citizens. A plaque is on display honoring all memorial gifts.

The library appreciates the interest shown by the community. Our goal is to buy or build a facility that will meet our future needs.
