The Sunshine Art Club had maintained a library in Long Island for many years before the citizens voted to set up a legal library.

On May 3, 1976, a new library was started with several of the Sunshine Art Club members as officers and directors. This arrangement has worked out very well, and the library has been built up and is available to one and all who like to read.

The city of Long Island provided a space in the Post Office Building to house the library, and continues to pay all utility bills for library usage.

Children's Hour is a very popular long-standing service of the library, providing entertainment and educational experiences for the last ten years.

The library has a large collection of fiction and non-fiction books and many children's books. Large print books are plentiful, and are widely used by Long Island's patrons.

Anna Kaiser was hired as the first librarian. Various young people helped when needed, especially with the Summer Reading Programs.

The Central Kansas Library System originally sent books to be checked out through the rotating schedule. The Long Island Community Library is now a member of the System, and appreciate all System services which enable the Library to be what it is today.
