The Logan Library Association was organized in 1900 by sixteen local businessmen. The association was named for John Logan. In 1902 the men and their wives met together to organize the Woman's Club, formed to help the men run the library. A cash donation was made by Mrs. John Logan and this, along with benefits and socials that required a book as the price of admission, gave the library its start. The Woman's Club continued to be the sole support of the library, as the library did not receive any tax monies until they began receiving funds distributed by CKLS in 1968.
The library was first housed in the lobby of the First State Bank. In April of 1905 it was moved to the new Opera House, where it was given a ninety-nine year lease. In 1939 a building on the south side of Main Street was donated by Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Wiltrout for the library. This building was used until 1968 when the Woman's Club entered into an agreement with the Dane G. Hansen Foundation to exchange their building for a new one in the Hansen Plaza. The Logan Public Library opened in their new location in April of 1973. The library is able to offer our patrons the opportunity to view several very interesting exhibits during the year, including many traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian, because of the location in the Hansen Museum building.
The library has continued to add services and programs. Story Hour programs have been expanded to include summer and winter activities for children. A new young adult section has been added to the library shelves. Frequent visits to the school classrooms to promote library activities and services have increased library use by elementary and high school students. Adult library use has been increased by promotion of the interlibrary loan services available through CKLS and by attempting to purchase most of the books that appear on the best seller lists. In November of 1986 a campaign to register all library users by January 1987 was begun. The community responded in a very positive way and one hundred adults and ninety-one children have been issued cards.
