On April 13, 1913, in answer to an application to the Carnegie Corporation, the city of Lincoln received an offer of $6,000 to build a library. The city was asked to supply $600 annually for library maintenance; voters approved this measure with a vote of 424-166. A site on Third and Court Streets was donated by the Christian Science Church. On May 5, 1914, the Social Science Club hosted a reception and on May 6 the Library was open to the public. Persons living within one mile had free usage of the Library; others paid $1 per year or ten cents per book.

The rectangular, one-story building is of native limestone ("post-rock") and sits upon a raised basement. Very few changes were made until extensive interior remodeling was done in 1970. The only major exterior change has been the replacement of the original red tiled roof.

In 1978 the basement was renovated and in April of 1979, it was opened as a children's library. Its carpeted floor, child-sized furniture (including a bathtub filled with soft cushions), and well-stocked shelves create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Children's Librarian Evelyn Bolte presents story hours, coordinates Summer Reading Programs and orders films for various individuals and institutions.

In addition to offering current fiction and non-fiction, the Library has a varied selection of periodicals, records, and children's cassettes which may be borrowed. Patterns, a camera, film and slide projectors, and a screen are also available for checkout. Patrons may view Lincoln County newspapers and census records on the microfilm reader. Children enjoy listening to records and using the filmstrip viewer in the basement. A photocopying service is also provided.

Each month a new display is featured with emphasis upon area residents I artistic talents.

The Lincoln Carnegie Library has been a member of the Central Kansas Library System since its inception. All the services available through CKLS are greatly appreciated by the librarians and their patrons.
