The Kanopolis Public Library was conceived in 1942 when some ambitious members of the Sunflower Civic Club decided the town needed a library.
The first Library in Kanopolis was an old filling station donated by Florence Jewell to the Civic Club. At first members of the Club operated the Library. Other librarians included Mrs. Calcara, Mrs. McCall, Mrs. Svoboda and Mrs. Kline. The filling station was the Library until the Independent Salt Company donated a 42 X 30 foot metal building in June of 1980.
This building included a room for the library collection and a community room with a kitchen. Mrs. Mildred Kline was the librarian at this time. Judy Nivison took over the librarian's duties when Mildred decided to retire. After two years, Judy moved to Colorado and Jan Andrews replaced her.
In July of 1986, the library board decided that more space was needed to house the expanding collection of juvenile and adult literature. A major community project was begun when Sara Sauers started a fund for a library addition with a $5,000 donation. The Independent Salt Company again showed their interest in library facilities with a matching $5,000 donation. This was a wonderful start for adding a 30 X 30 foot building to be used as a community room. The former community room was redesigned into a children's library, giving additional space in the main room for the adult collection.
With the help of the citizens of Kanopolis, sufficient funds were earned to completely pay for the $17,000 addition. The cooperation of all resulted in a beautiful library and community room for the Kanopolis area.
