In 1966 Jewell joined the Central Kansas Library System, began receiving Rotating Book Service and funds, and the library's name was changed to the Jewell Public Library. The local collection, which began with fifty volumes, now numbers more than four thousand, two hundred and fifty books, which symbolizes the growth to a modem service-oriented facility.

The library formerly was under the Citizen's State Bank. In 1976 the collection was moved to the new building that also houses the Fire Station and the City Machine Shop. The Boys' Service Club of the Jewell High School assisted with the move, joining board members and other patrons, who did the shelving.

In 1971 the Summer Reading Program was begun, and it has continued to be a popular service. Children from the Jewell area checked out one thousand, five hundred and twenty books during the summer of 1986. In 1979 the Story Hour Program began with an average of fifteen children.

The library celebrated its fiftieth year with an Open House on June 13, 1976, and its sixtieth anniversary with an Open House June 21, 1986. An annual Open House is held at the library during National Library Week.

During the years the library has continued to expand its services, adding a book return, an outdoor bulletin board, two book trucks, and a hanging magazine rack. Each month the library has a display of crafts or collections. Approximately two hundred fifty books a year are purchased for children, young adults and adults, with checkouts during 1986 totaling six thousand two hundred fifty-four volumes.
