On September 8, 1898, a group of seven Jamestown ladies met to organize a literary club, which later became the Current Literature and History Club. The club members saw a need for a library and a traveling library was ordered and housed in space donated by Mr. EA. Lane. The library was open two days a week, with a club member acting as librarian.

In January of 1899 it was decided to save money for a library foundation, and in May of that year the first order of books was purchased with funds raised at a social. Other funds were solicited toward the erection of a library building.

The club incorporated in April of 1900 as a necessary action to hold property. A lot was purchased and the present site of the library became a part of Jamestown. On November 30, 1904, Ora Good was selected to be librarian. Funds were raised to erect a library building, and on January 25, 1901, the books were moved to their new building.

In November of 1911, only sixty-five books were saved from a devastating fire which destroyed all of the main street, including the library. After three months the library was open once again, in the basement of the Methodist Church. Through donations and the insurance money, a new library was built.

After the library was established and some money was available, the librarian received $10.00 a year for services. Ora Ansdell served as librarian between 1904 and 1967; Lulu Gifford was librarian between 1967 to 1981; and Esther Beaushaw served as librarian from 1981 to 1987.

The Jamestown library conducts an active story hour, summer reading program, and movie hour for children and young people; provides all services of CKLS, including interlibrary loan and large print books; has an expanding collection of current selections of fiction and non-fiction on both adult and juvenile levels; and has a rapidly increasing number of books presented as memorials. The library board appreciates the high level of interest of the community in the library and its growing program of activities and services.
