In July of 1885 seven young women met and organized a club for the purpose of creating an interest in literature in the recently settled town of Glen Elder. The book collection was kept in homes.
In the summer of 1891 the club was reorganized under the state laws and a charter was granted to the Glen Elder Library Association. They rented a small building on the west side of the square and members of the Association shared the duties of librarian.
In 1911 they purchased a two room brick building. This served as the library for forty--four years.
On January 20, 1955, they purchased a brick front building on the west side of the town square. This is the present home of the Glen Elder Library. Members of the Glen Elder Library Association continued to serve as librarians until September of 1973, when a librarian was hired.
