n 1908 a girls' club known as the TMT Oub decided a library was needed in Courtland, so the members dedicated themselves to this project. Books were solicited from local residents in the number of seventy-five second hand volumes. A room was rented over the Freeberg Mercantile store. Socials and other entertainment raised money for rent, shelves, and the purchase of a few books.

Smoke from a fire forced the books to be moved to a small store on Main Street, then later to the Opera House. In 1910 the books were moved to a room in Dr. Snider's new office building, one-half block west of Main Street. Volunteers from the TMT Club still checked out the books. A room behind the Swedish American State Bank was offered to house the collection in 1915. The library was moved there, where it remained unti11975. In 1923 a Library Study was formed to maintain the library. In 1927 the name became the Courtland City Library and the citizens decided to support the library with taxes. A paid librarian and assistant librarian were elected.

The library was open only two to four hours a week from 1927 until 1975, at which time the hours were lengthened to six hours. In 1979 the Library hours were expanded again, this time to ten hours per week.

The Traveling library from the State Library began visits three times a year in 1958, leaving books and magazines. The Courtland Library became associated with the Central Kansas Library System in 1968.

During 1974, the PRIDE Committee chose the renovation of old buildings as their goal, and it was decided to house the Library in one of the renovated structures. The Library was moved July 11, 1975, to a building on Main Street which had been remodeled by local volunteers with money from donations and revenue sharing. This building also houses the City Office.
