The Independent Township Library was first organized in June of 1961 by a Lion's Club committee and other interested citizens. The library opened with donated books in the American Legion Hall, which is now the Community Center. Book collections were ordered from the Traveling Libraries Commission and family library cards were sold for a dollar a year.
Later the library was moved to an old theatre which was no longer in use, and the library sponsored a program of summer movies along with the ever popular children's Summer Reading Program.
In April of 1962, the township voted to support the library with a tax levy of .25 mills, and Mrs. Ruth Brunts was hired as the librarian.
In September of 1977 the library moved to its present location on 223 Main Street. Mrs.
Martina Luebbers was the librarian beginning on August 8, 1972 until December 1988.
The library has a different display each month. These have included paintings, ceramics,
china paintings, dolls, bells, old-time banks,
samplers, afghans and many others.
