The Burr Oak City Library was started in 1912 in the Methodist Church study. Reverend Woods acted as librarian. In 1919 the library collection was moved to shelves on a wall in the old City Hall.

The Excelsior Club was the main support of the library for many years.

In 1923 the city voted one tenth of a mill tax levy to support the library. At that time the librarian was paid $5.00 per month.

Unfortunately, much early history is missing, as the library was temporarily closed during 1985 and the library records were destroyed at that time. The minutes from the Burr Oak city council meetings furnish the only written records.

The library is now housed in the old grade school building, which is a two story limestone building that was erected in 1899.

Burr OaksÕ first school house was built in 1877. Due to the increasing number of students a new, larger school was built in 1882. By 1899 this school was also overflowing so a limestone building was constucted. This limestone building, shown in the picture still stands today and is home to the Burr Oak Library and Museum.

The library and its patrons have looked forward for many years to the arrival of the Rotating Book Van and the many other services received from the Central Kansas Library System.
