RuneScape tournament at
Meade (Kansas) Public Library

On December 2, 2006 the Meade (Kansas) Public Library held a RuneScape tournament after the library closed at 1 p.m. and it lasted until 3 p.m. There were a total of 14 boys who played on the day of the tournament. The Meade Public students preferred to play combat only. The information about that night comes from Crystal Hutchinson.

The Tournament

Crystal wrote, "I created a double-elimination tournament so that everyone got to play at least twice. There were 5 members and 9 non-members playing in the tournament. I created a bracket for members and a bracket for non-members.

When the boys first arrived, I handed out sheets for them to take home that showed the educational benefits of RuneScape in the "Parent's Guide" on the RuneScape Web site. I then handed out the Meade Public Library Runescape tournament rules and consequences. The boys had explained over the weeks prior to the tournament that they didn't want to lose their stuff on RuneScape when they died. So, it became a rule to return your opponent's stuff after the battle. Then I handed out the Runescape Rules, also found on the RuneScape Web site.

We had 8 available computers for combat. I put 3 non-member battles and one member battle on four pairs of computers. The two boys playing each other decided what world to meet at. The other six ate popcorn and drank soda provided by the library. They also watched the students battling. Sometimes they would report a student breaking the rules. That worked out nicely. After the non-member's bracket needed two more matches to complete, I started placing all the kids in the loser brackets on computers. That way all the boys stayed for the whole thing, instead of playing and leaving.

The winner of the member's match received Holes on CD. The winner of the non-member match received a small hand-held radio. These were just items we had on hand here at the library.

I would like to make the following changes for next time.

  • New prizes for the winners
  • Have a destination already picked out for everyone before the day of the tournament
  • Food for the characters provided at the beginning of the event in RuneScape
  • An adult helper
