Every 20-minutes CKLS staff will be teaching up to five sessions in CKLS headquarters. There will be at least 40 learning experiences in all. You choose which experiences to attend. Each CKLS department will have special sessions introducing their departments to new librarians. Lunch is on your own.

35 pieces of furniture are available for take away: file cabinets of all sizes, regular cabinets, office desks, computer desk, chairs, wooden shelf, etc. Bring your trucks.

Twenty shelves of adult books will be given away: inspirational fiction, mysteries, non-fiction, and romance.

The Signage Workshop is offered annually so CKLS libraries have an opportunity to create signs for their library. Gail Santy, Bev Cross, and Diedre Mapes will help you create a wonderful collection of signs for your library. Library signage is much like doing dishes or laundry – the job is never done! Shabby signs need to be replaced. Perhaps you have rearranged your library and need signs to reflect current locations or maybe it is time to update the color scheme in your library and want an inexpensive way to try on a new color.

At this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Quickly and easily create signs of all sizes with Microsoft Publisher.
  • Current best practices for do-it-yourself signage.

If this is your first time to attend the Signage Workshop, there is homework to be done. Use the Signage Homework document to determine your library signage needs. As always, if you have any questions, please contact Gail Santy at CKLS.

This year’s incentive grant required libraries to submit library policies. I have noticed some librarians and boards appear to believe their libraries function well without policies. Here are several reasons policies would improve the functioning of your libraries and boards.
Library policies establish relationships and interactions between patrons, library staff, library administration, materials, and buildings. One duty of the library board is to ensure these relationships and interactions are proper, i.e., protect the rights and needs of all the entities listed above. How do library boards guide these relationships outside board meetings? Through well-written policies.
  1. Each year library boards receive two new members. How can new members be brought up to speed on how the library works? By reading up-to-date policies.
  2. How does the library board know whether or not the library director and staff are doing their jobs correctly? Comparing library work with library policy.
  3. Bad policies, poorly implemented can lose the library law suits.
This workshop is Chris Rippel’s response to the library policies submitted this year and suggestions for the bylaws to be submitted next year.
This workshop will:
  • Which policies submitted by CKLS members violate state and federal laws or are just not up-to-date?
  • What issues/questions do policies address?
  • How should policies balance patron’s rights with the library’s needs to conduct business? When patrons are kicked out of the library for misbehavior, they are being denied a First Amendment right to use the library. Determining who can and cannot speak in meeting rooms may also deny First Amendment protected free speech. In both cases, patrons can sue. If library policies are not correctly written and implemented, the library will lose the suit.
  • Comparisons between policies.
    • Personnel policies: sick leave accumulation, vacation time, leave, holidays, etc.
    • What is the relationship between overdue fines, checkout period, and amount of overdues?
    • How are library policies organized for ease of use?
    • Where and how can I find examples of other policies?
