Collection Development
All libraries are expected to maintain attractive collections by weeding (withdrawing) at least 2 percent of the materials collection per year. This can be accomplished by carefully evaluating the collection and withdrawing items that no longer meet the collection development standard and by counting the number of items that were checked out but never returned.

Materials on the Kansas Library Catalog
Since the purpose of any library catalog is to show all materials for use in the library or for checkout, libraries must enter all new or donated materials except mass-market paperbacks on the Kansas Library Catalog or on an online catalog linked to the Kansas Library Catalog. Any library materials not already cataloged should be added to the catalog. This may be accomplished by having CKLS Technical Services process all new books or by having CKLS enter the bibliographic data on the KLC.

Special Project
Projects come up from time to time, that the librarian just does not have time to do during the normal paid workday. Identify 20 hours ($10 per hour) of special projects that don’t get done because the librarian does not have enough time to do them. The following is a partial list of high impact projects that will help guide you to using this money.
• Purchasing paint and wages to paint walls
• Renting equipment and purchasing wages for extensive cleaning of library
• Purchasing wages to reorganize the collection or the furniture
• Purchasing video gaming equipment or games for community gaming nights
• Purchasing equipment or wages for making video tour of library
• Purchasing supplies and wages to make a tree or castle in the children’s area
• Purchasing equipment and wages for creating shelf-talkers

Summer Library Program
The Summer Library Program (SLP)includes an organized program during the summer to encourage reading by having children keep a record of the books they read. The Summer Library program may include activities, crafts, story time, and rewards for reading. The SLP report must be submitted on the date requested or the grant will be reduced.

Programming for Targeted Populations
Linking and Gateway libraries need to do 14 regularly scheduled programs per year.
Service Center and Major Service Center I libraries need to do 20 regularly scheduled programs per year.
Major Service Center II and Major Resource Library I libraries need to do at least 24 regularly scheduled programs per year.

Story Time Program
Story Time programs include regular programs open to the public, not including the Summer Library Program. These programs may be conducted by regular staff members or by volunteers. They may be conducted outside the library if they are open to the public and include the opportunity to checkout library materials.
Two or more story time sessions per week count as one program

Alternative Programs
In place of regular story time programs the library may conduct programs of special interest for families, youth, adults, or other targeted populations. The alternative events must include regular programs that are held for 10 consecutive weeks or more. They must be open to the public and not be part of the Summer Library Program. These programs may be conducted by regular staff members or by volunteers. They may be conducted outside the library if they include the opportunity to checkout materials.
If the librarian and board decide to do alternative programming to qualify for this grant they must submit a brief outline of the plan to CKLS before assuming that the alternative programming idea will meet the requirement for this incentive grant.

Librarian and Trustee Training
The Central Kansas Library System gives each library $700 each year to purchase training for librarians, library staff and trustees. This money can be used for attending workshops by CKLS or library-related workshops, classes, online training by others. This money can also be used to pay staff to attend training when the library is closed or pay someone to run the library if the library is open and no one else is available to run the library. Three hundred dollars for each library has been added to the Continuing Education Competitive Grant for use in attending additional programs.
Any money not spent on valid continuing education projects must be returned to CKLS.
